Plot summary: The story begins with a flashforward where Suzuhara Kokoro and his blind little sister are seen fleeing from a menacing and mysterious figure, which is closing in on them. The ghost of a dead girl appears and shows Kokoro and Yume the way to a safe hiding place. The mysterious figure appears to be one of the teachers from the island. Flashing back to the time when they first arrived on the island, Kokoro's first impression of the island is "big and quiet." A woman teacher is seen in the water fishing with a net, and one of the other teachers tells her to "get used to the island." The teachers introduce Kokoro and Yume to the 4 other children on the island, and at this point one of the teachers explains to them the significance of the word "hohzuki", which is the name of a plant found on the island which is also known as the ground cherry or fairy lamp.
